One of the softest and most luxurious natural fibers known to man is mohair. Clothing made from it is not only fashionable, but also durable, does not crease, does not shrink and is easy to care for. But where does it come from? Here’s where the fabric for your mohair sweater or cape comes from.

The word mohair actually comes from the Turkish word “muyhar”, which literally translates as “the best-chosen fleece”. The original mohair originally came from Turkey and was sheared from Angora goats native to the province of Ankara in that country. The fabric was so valuable that for hundreds of years the sultans of the Ottoman Empire tried to keep it a secret. The export of the fabric was banned and goats were highly protected.

Around 1820, everything changed. As the Ottoman Empire slowly began to decline, their power to control where the goats in their country went became less and less. Angora goats began to be exported to various parts of the world. Most of the lint in the world today, about 60% of total production, actually comes from South Africa. The United States is the second largest producer, with Texas and a few other states being a major industry. South America is also an important producer.

There are three types of mohair, Kid, Goatling and Adult, which you can buy from the stores. Most lint you’ll see is adult lint. This is a little more natural than the other two varieties, but is also much cheaper. Capricorn angora is made only from the first shear of a young goat. Incredibly good, but also much more expensive. Along the same lines, Mohair is made from the second shearing. It’s not that good, but it shares many similarities with Kid mohair, and it’s also much more expensive than adult mohair.

Mohair is a wonderful fabric with a unique history.
