Knitting, which has been out of fashion for decades, has recently experienced a renaissance.

Knitting is an ancient skill that dates back nearly a millennium, but is clearly still relevant and attractive today as it has quickly become a popular social activity.

It appeals to every demographic it appears: from kids to retirees to models to grandmothers. Knitting can be beneficial, save money, soothing, creative and even addictive! These are compelling reasons to start knitting in a modern and often stressful world.

Preparing Yourself

Equipping yourself for your new hobby is not expensive at all.

Buying boxes of knitting needles filled with almost any size needle available is an unnecessary expense. Even the most experienced knitter will probably not use every size needle produced. Only buy as many needles as you need. They should last a lifetime.

The size of the needle you need for any thread is indicated on the ball band. But if you don’t knit in the standard tension, you’ll need another size. Your tension will likely be quite tense as you begin to learn, but will loosen as you and your hands become more comfortable.

You will usually need two pairs of needles to knit a garment. The smaller size will be used for the rib. To check if the needle size is suitable for the tension you are knitting, the pattern will suggest you knit a tension square. However, this exercise is nothing to worry yourself as a beginner.

You just need to learn how to knit; and a simple square is a good first project.

Knitting needles are made from different materials: plastic, metal, wood and bamboo. Plastic ones may feel most comfortable initially, and they come in a range of colors. Needle types are a matter of personal preference. Experimenting with different ones can come later.

You’ll also need a small pair of scissors and perhaps a bag to store all your knitting and equipment.

If you leave knitting on the skewer for a long time, a scar will form on your work. So, if you need to set aside an unfinished piece of knitting for a while, drop it on a loop holder or smaller knitting needle to pick it up again when you’re ready. But as a beginner learning to knit, you probably won’t be making any clothes to wear, so you don’t have to worry about this issue at this stage.

Do not learn to knit with large needles and thick threads. You will need something comfortable to hold in your hand and these may be too bulky to handle.

While starting

It’s probably best to start learning with double knitting yarn on 4mm needles.

The double knit yarn is manageable, neither too fine nor too thick, and available in a wide variety of colours. Do not work with very dark yarns such as black or navy blue when you start learning. If you drop a stitch, it will be very difficult to see.

Once you’ve learned to knit, you can switch to other yarn thicknesses and be as creative and experimental as you want – but to get started, you need to make things as easy as possible for yourself.

Being Social

There are books and magazines out there with diagrams that show you how to knit, but knitting is probably a skill best learned by watching someone do it.

Many knitting yarn shops are starting their own classes now, and if they don’t have anything very formal, there may be a knitting circle you can join with experienced knitters to help you out every time you get stuck or knit a stitch.

Notice a poster displayed in a prominent position. They’ll be more than happy to sign you up, and if they fill up, they may have a waiting list you can join.

Knitting clubs and cafes are also listed on the Internet; there may be a local one for you.

Getting More Help

Otherwise, if there’s no one to help you, just google ‘how to knit video’. These videos will help you with different stitches and casting. Knowing how to knit is not difficult at all. It just takes some practice to gain proficiency and then speed.
