How many times have you spent money and time knitting a sweater that makes you look like Cinderella’s car – when it was a pumpkin? Or the back of a horse? Yes me too. The problem wasn’t our knitting, it was choosing a style that didn’t suit our shapes. Here are tips on how to dress for your body type so your next hand-knit sweater will make you look like a dream.

If You Are Too Heavy

At the top, your shoulders and/or bust are larger than your hips, so which sweater style looks great? One with vertical elements minimizes the top, plus horizontal elements at the bottom provide stability. A V-neck, round neck, vertical stripe or detailed sweater will visually reduce your top. A skirt detail on your hips, a pattern or a different color will provide balance. Finish the sleeves anywhere from the elbow to the wrist.

If Your Bottom Is Heavy

Your hips or calves are larger than the upper part, so what gives your body more visual stability? Wide neckline, yoke sweater or horizontal detail on the upper body will make you look wider than you really are. Look for vertical items at the hem that should end above or below where you are widest. The sleeves should end anywhere except where you are widest. Wear your cardigan fully open or just open the bottom for a vertical element.

If you are balanced

Your top and bottom match so keep them balanced. If you make a pullover with a yoke, add a design to the hem as well. Trojan sleeves, with or without them, can draw attention to your waist. Vertical items like top-down cables with neckline and hem detailing can look great.

Keep these tips in mind when deciding which sweater to knit from among the millions of sweaters available. When you wear a hand-knit sweater with stabilizing properties for your body type, you’ll look and feel like a fairy godmother waving her magic wand.

Remember, you knit for fun, relaxation, and productive results.
