Easy Braided Headband Knitting Pattern

Materials:

  • Yarn: Any yarn from sock weight to worsted weight. Approximately 23-35 yards.
  • Recommended Needles: Double-pointed needles or circular needle slightly smaller than recommended for the yarn weight.

Additional Materials:

  • One or two good-quality hair elastics
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

Instructions:

Setup:

  1. Using the yarn and needles, cast on 9 stitches. This will create a headband approximately 2 inches wide. Adjust the number of stitches for a wider or narrower headband, ensuring it’s an odd number of stitches.

Pattern:

  1. Row 1 (Right Side): Knit all stitches.
  2. Row 2 (Wrong Side): Purl all stitches.
  3. Row 3: Knit all stitches.
  4. Row 4: Purl all stitches.

Repeat these four rows until the headband reaches your desired length, usually around 18-20 inches, depending on the head circumference.

Finishing:

  1. Bind off all stitches knitwise on a knit row.
  2. Using a tapestry needle, seam the ends of the headband together to create a loop.
  3. Fold the loop in half, bringing the seamed ends together.

Braiding:

  1. Divide the loop into three equal sections, as you would for a braid.
  2. Braid the sections together, keeping the tension even.
  3. When you reach the end, secure the braid by binding off the stitches.

Assembly:

  1. Using the tapestry needle, sew the unbraided portion of the headband to the center of the braided section.
  2. Attach a hair elastic to each end of the headband by sewing them securely, ensuring they’re positioned for a comfortable fit around your head.

Final Touch: Weave in any loose ends and trim excess yarn.

Note: Experiment with different yarn weights and textures to create various headband styles. Thicker yarns will yield a wider headband, while lighter weights will result in a more delicate look.
