Given the price of yarn these days, it’s almost hard to imagine any real savings with crochet. But it’s true, crocheting can help save a lot of money. Ah but crochet takes time and time is money; so when i take it into account all the time, it will cost me twice as much as if i bought my products from the store.

At the same time, how many hours do we spend in front of the TV each day? Or how many hours we sit and chat with each other. Believe it or not, then it’s cash too! And did you know that once you start making a pattern, you can sit back and relax while you crochet? Yes, you can do this while watching TV, chatting with friends, or when you need a break from other activities. When you look at it from this point of view, crochet doesn’t actually take any time. Actually, crocheting is good therapy.
Now all that remains is the price of yarn and hooks. Yes, they can be expensive, but if you know how to shop, then it doesn’t have to cost you that much.

Yarn can be purchased on sale. Michaels usually have really good deals. There’s also a coupon program that lets you get up to 40% off your first item. This is how I knitted my Autumn Striped Afghani. It started with my yarn now, but because I needed more yarn, I would go back every week and buy a ball of yarn at 40% off. So cute if you ask me!
The blanket is now gone and you would never know there are different batch codes between the colors.
But what if you want to make a nice sweater and need to buy your yarn on a shopping trip to make sure you get the same batch code? Again, you can get great deals at Michaels. They have coupons that allow you to save 20% on all purchases.
Another option is to wait for the yarn to go on sale. However, if you’re waiting for your favorite yarn to go on sale, you can wait a while. So this may not be an option. However, visiting yarn stores frequently will help you find discounts on other yarns you might like. The only problem with this is that you may end up with more threads than you can handle.
Then there is online shopping. Many online retailers offer their yarns at a discount for a variety of reasons. The problem with this is that you usually pay high shipping charges. However, many retailers will offer free shipping on certain days or on orders over a certain amount. So if you know you’re going to use it a lot, this might be an option.
Also, be sure to check your local yarn stores for advantages in saving yarn.
One last thing you can do is use precious yarns instead of more expensive yarns. Red Heart and Bernat carry several excellent yarns that are perfect for afghans, bags, rugs, and other projects where drape and comfort really aren’t an issue.
